As things are starting to slowly regain their sense of normality, many of us are starting to reflect upon what happened in lockdown – the good, the bad and the ugly. It prompted a conversation at OutdoorCureOnline HQ about communication and how it varies in the different roles we have. Our ‘work’ role – as a colleague and employee. Social distancing measures have meant a rise in working from home…and working from home has meant lines have become a bit blurry. We have all laughed about the Zoom meeting attire where the top half is professional and presentable and the bottom half is akin to pyjama bottoms. Has the same thing happened to our communication? Have the lines become blurred and once leaders and employees see each other in a home environment, does it push those lines? Are we colleagues or friends in this domain? We have put together a handy guide to help you navigate the rocky road of communication!


The OutdoorCure Online Guide to Effective Online Communication

  • Avoid gossip about anyone you work with. It may seem harmless and easier to get away with while apart but it is best to avoid being judgemental and gossipy in a work role.
  • Create boundaries from the start. If ‘Mary from Finance’ rings you 971 times a day, it will be fun for the first day and very quickly you will start avoiding her so take the time out to think about what your boundaries are and stick to them.
  • Make sure your background is professional while working at home. Don’t have music on or the washing machine going. Remember you are still a representative of your company.
  • Keep your written communication to the point: don’t ramble, be ambiguous or over familiar.
  • Remember communication is a journey not a destination. Keep learning and keep going. Reflect and review what is working and what is not and be prepared to make changes.
  • Do remember your workplace culture. It is all too easy to forget policies, procedures and all those unspoken ‘rules’ when working from home.
  • Just because emojis are available on methods of communication, it doesn’t mean they should be used (* inserts wink emoji *)
